You know those memories that last a lifetime? Well, this was definitely one of them. 

With three kids and a full-time job, finding time for a one-on-one adventure with my daughter felt like a precious opportunity. Stepping away from the daily routine gave us the chance to connect in ways we rarely get to at home. For so long, I've wanted to share my passion for cycling with my daughter.

The idea of returning to New Zealand to complete this trip has been with me since our family holiday back in 2018 so when I was looking at opportunities to finally spend some quality time with my youngest daughter, we saw Adventure South NZ's Alps to Ocean tour. Unbelievably, the dates lined up perfectly with school holidays! My daughter was excited at the idea, so it was a done deal!

I do admit I was a little nervous travelling with my little girl. You want them to have the best experience possible. Every mum knows the feeling... Is Zoe going to make friends? Is she comfortable? Where are we eating next? 

Let me tell you, this trip is New Zealand at its finest! Right from the get-go we knew we were in excellent hands. 

Meeting us in Christchurch, our Guides Tereza and Harry made my daughter and I, and all group members, feel comfortable immediately. We were also super fortunate to share the trip with a great bunch of people from all walks of life and from around the world who were there to enjoy the cycle challenge with full New Zealand hospitality! The entire group took Zoe under their wing and I knew we could just enjoy the trip, and soak up as much mother-daughter time as we could.

The group all became so close that no one was ever left behind. We traversed stunning glacial lakes with the New Zealand Alps and Aoraki/Mt Cook as our backdrop in the early stages of the trip before pushing each other to reach the top of Tarnbrae Saddle of Day 3.

Zoe couldn't get over the last night's accommodation at Burnside Homestead. Aside from the lovely owner Cathy, and their huge Irish Wolfhound dog, the layout of the homestead was like a real like game of Cluedo, with a Billiard Room, Conservatory, Dining Room and a Great Hall!

Having the opportunity to share this experience with my daughter was the real highlight for me. It was such a special experience, filled with moments that we'll cherish forever — separate from the usual hustle and bustle. And sharing it on a cycling journey, with its mix of adventure and challenge, added a depth to our bond that I never expected. We had great fun, really enjoyed the trail, accommodation, ate fantastic food and all the group members really made Zoe feel welcome, which was great for her, and for me too!
