NEW Otago Rail Trail tour from Queenstown

Bali to Manali - that's my winter battle cry!

Last year my wife Shelley and I escaped the NZ winter to trek in Peru to celebrate my 60th birthday. We had such a fantastic time with good friends that we resolved to enjoy even more active winter escapes while we were still able to.

While we enjoyed the hard core trekking the thought of combining activity with a little indulgence is very appealing, and this is the focus for our new Bali, Backroads and Beaches cycle tour which we've just launched.

This new itinerary gets us away from the hurly-burly of Kuta but still provides fantastic resort accommodation, genuine cultural interaction and of course great cycling each morning before it gets too hot. Our June departure is already full, and the first July departure already guaranteed to go, so you better hurry if you want to join us this year. Prefer something tougher? Join me on our Leh to Manali cycle adventure in the Indian Himalaya!

On the flipside you may want to be in NZ to enjoy our spectacular Southern Alps on a snowshoeing adventure - learn more below.

For those considering our popular Otago Rail Trail you'll be happy to know we have even more options for you to choose from, whether you prefer a little more adventure or a slower pace with the kids. Read on to learn more....
1. NEW TOUR: Enjoy the Otago Rail Trail & Queenstown

How do you make an already iconic tour even more popular? Simple. By combining it with yet another icon!

We've just released the details of our new Queenstown Otago Rail Trail which includes time in two of the South Islands most popular destinations - the adventure capital of Queenstown as well as the famous Otago Rail Trail.

Over 6 days you'll experience some of the great new trails in the Queenstown basin before embarking on a beautiful ride from Arrowtown to the Kawarau Bungy bridge where we join the Otago Rail Trail.

Of course Queenstown itself is a highlight and for those wanting to spend more time here get in touch to discuss accommodation options. With extra flight options into Queenstown domestically and from aboard, getting here to enjoy one of our nine new summer departures is easy as, well, riding a bike!

Visit the Queenstown Otago Rail Trail webpage to download the trip notes or to book your place.
2. NEW & IMPROVED! Otago Rail Trail family tour

We have hosted numerous family groups from all over the world along the Otago Rail Trail. They've loved the variety of activities on offer to keep as well as the gentler cycling on a vehicle free trail however we're always trying to improve on prefect and we've been working hard this summer to develop an even better Otago Rail Trail Family tour.

Taking advantage of our new option to start out of Queenstown will allow you to add an exciting beginning to your tour, especially if you decide to allow extra time here. Finishing in Dunedin also allows families to add on optional side visits to the Cadbury's Chocolate factory or even an excursion to the Albatross colony.

The kids will happily burn the excess energy along the Otago Rail Trail in a supported environment and from experience they'll enjoy the ride as much as you will.

Free bike hire for kids, early dinners, family friendly accommodation and a great price for kids. This summer we have two dedicated departure dates based around school holidays but are always open to private dates for family groups.

Check out our Family Otago Rail Trail photo gallery.

3. TRIP SPOTLIGHT: Marlborough Sounds & Abel Tasman Trails

Over the past two summers, our Marlborough Sounds & Abel Tasman Trails walking tour has inspired great reviews from our travellers who have been amazed at the variety of simply great hiking experiences this itinerary provides.

One of the highlights, the two day Nydia Bay hike, is made possible by the stunning lodge half way along our walk, where your host Duncan and his parents provide great hospitality (we were voted the friendliest country, remember!) in a magical location. The lodge, which features two story cabins and even a converted train carriage, has become one of our favourite overnight stays and makes for a great nights slumber. View the gallery to see what we mean.

Other memorable moments include time spent sailing back from Torrent Bay on a trimaran and the Mt Roberts hike in the gorgeous Nelson Lakes National Park.

If you want to sample a unique hiking tour on the South Island, this really is a 'must-do' for you next summer.
4. Build an igloo on our NZ Snowshoeing Adventure!

Ever wanted to try building an igloo? Well, you can if you want on our 5 day NZ Snowshoeing adventure.

Snowshoeing is growing in popularity as more and more summer hikers realise that a winter alpine walking adventure is much more than just plodding around on glorified tennis rackets!

Based out of a snug, private mountain hut - complete with pot belly stove - each day on this trip provide you with amazing memories. You'll explore new trails on each daily outing and the views down to Lake Tekapo and the Southern Alps have to be seen to be believed.

Building an igloo will be an optional activity. Check out this clip for some handy pre-tour tips on how to build your shelter!

Check out the pics from previous trips.

5. It's as Easy as Riding a Bike... or is it?

We used the saying 'It's as easy as riding a bike' in this newsletter. But does this saying really ring true?

Whilst fact checking and debating the use of the quote amongst ourselves we discovered this interesting little article in the Guardian that outlines how riding a bike is actually a very complicated matter indeed!

It's an amazing read that also goes on to show a video of a 58 year old man who was unable to walk but was still able to ride his bike!

The human brain truly is a remarkable thing, just like our cycling tours!!

6. Last minute & Guaranteed Departures

Otago Rail Trail: Helped by an amazing spell of great weather, bookings have been so strong that we have added two further departures to the end of this season, April 29th and May 6th. Get in quick before these fill as well!
